Thin the Veil Candle Spell

A Magic Spell for Samhain

Samhain is a time when it is believed that the boundary between the Otherworld and the mundane physical world is more permeable, facilitating contact with our loved ones, ancestors and spiritual allies.

If spirit work is part of your practice, we can use this period to draw our spirit allies to us for communication, guidance and honouring or veneration.

Samhain is one of the four Celtic fire festivals, and at Samhain, fires were lit in Ancient Ireland, symbolising warmth and protection in the coming winter months. Therefore, working with the fire element via candle magic can be a potent way of working with the Samhain energies.

We are crafting a Thin the Veil Candle in this spell to attract our ancestors and spiritual allies.

For this spell, you will need:

  • One black candle (protection, spirit communication)

  • Candle holder

  • Pen and piece of paper

  • Mortar and pestle

  • Glass of water

  • Dirt from your local land*

  • Rosemary (protection, remembrance)

  • Mugwort (facilities spirit communication, opens psychic abilities)

  • Oregano (enhances love and connection, brings peace to the spirit world)

  • Marigold/lily/carnation/chrysanthemum (honours the spirit world)

*You can substitute graveyard dirt if that is part of your practice.

Steps to create your Thin the Veil Candle:

1. Spend some time creating sacred space and call in the Samhain energy.

This could include lighting a Samhain incense, burning herbs, lighting candles or playing music that speaks to the Samhain energy for you. You wish to add some Samhain correspondences, such as pumpkins, apples etc., to your ritual space.

2. Ground, centre and connect to your energy centre

......and announce your intent to contact your spiritual allies, ancestors etc., and ask them to join you. As we are working with the spirit world, you may want to cast a circle or another form of magical protection.

3. Clear your working area

......and ensure you have physically and energetically cleansed your candle and other tools.

4. Spend some time meditating on your intent for your spell.

Are you looking to contact a specific ancestor or spirit ally? Do you seek guidance on a specific issue in your life? Or is your intent to connect with your ancestors and allies as an act of veneration?

5. When you feel ready, write your intent on your petition paper.

If you have a specific issue, you seek guidance on, write out your question. Place your petition paper face up under your candle holder.

6. You are now ready to prepare your herbal mixture.

You will be sprinkling this around your candle, so you will need a small amount of each herb.

7. Ensure you empower and charge each botanical before adding it to your mortar.

To bless and charge your herbs, hold your projecting or dominant hand over the herb and call forth the properties of that particular botanical. For example, hold the rosemary and state, “I bless and empower this rosemary and ask that it brings the power of protection and remembrance for those who have passed”. Always use words that feel right to you.

8. Repeat this with all your botanicals.

You can now add your dirt from your land or graveyard dirt. We work with this substance because the dirt contains the spirit of your land or place and is a potent link to your ancestors and spirit allies. Grind your dirt and botanical mix together to form a powder working in a clockwise direction.

9. You may want to charge your powder

......with additional magical energy before sprinkling it with intent around your candle. As you work, focus on the connection you want to form with your ancestors or spirit allies.

10. You will also want to charge your candle with your energy at this stage

......and speak your intent to your candle to act as a beacon to draw your loved ones, ancestors or spirit allies to you.

11. Add a fresh glass of water next to your candle as an offering

......and to facilitate your connection to the spirit world. You may also want to add photographs, flowers, mementoes, perfumes etc., to draw your loved ones and ancestors closer.

12. Now, you are ready to light your candle.

As your candle burns, breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the candle flame. Speak your intent or question into the candle flame and sincerely ask your ancestors or spirit allies to connect with you in sacred space and visualise the candle flame drawing your loved ones or guides closer to you. Pay attention to any sensations, thoughts, messages, images, etc., you receive. You may wish to record your experiences in your journal.

13. If you can, leave your candle to burn down

......while you continue to sit in sacred space with your ancestors and spirit allies. After your candle is extinguished, give thanks to the energies that have joined you and advise they are now free to return to their realm with your honour and respect.

Enjoy the blessings and guidance your ancestors or spirit allies have bestowed on you.
